BCAAs

BCAAs are largely redundant when daily protein is sufficient; use only in fasted/low-protein situations.

If you already hit 1.6-2.2 g/kg protein, BCAAs add little; use 5-10 g intra only if training fasted or protein is low.

What are BCAAs?

Branched-chain amino acids (leucine, isoleucine, valine) are essential amino acids often marketed for muscle retention and fatigue reduction.

How does it work?

Leucine triggers muscle protein synthesis, but full-length protein provides better results due to complete amino profiles. For those with adequate protein, extra BCAAs rarely improve outcomes. They may help reduce perceived fatigue slightly in low-protein or fasted conditions.

Practical application

Prioritize whole protein (whey, food). Consider 5-10 g BCAAs intra if you must train fasted or cannot eat protein near training. Otherwise, skip and invest in total protein and carbs. Stay hydrated; some BCAA drinks lack electrolytes.

  • Protein firstHit 1.6-2.2 g/kg total protein before buying BCAAs.
  • Use caseOnly helpful when fasted/low protein pre-training.
  • Dose5-10 g intra if needed.

Common mistakes

  • Replacing real protein with BCAAs and missing total targets.
  • Assuming BCAAs boost growth when protein intake is already sufficient.
  • Ignoring carbs/electrolytes for long sessions.
