EAAs

EAAs are a backup when protein access is limited; otherwise whole protein wins.

EAAs can bridge gaps when you cannot eat protein; 10-15 g can sub in, but whole protein is preferred.

What are EAAs?

Essential amino acids (EAAs) include the nine amino acids the body cannot produce. They can stimulate muscle protein synthesis when full protein meals are not available.

How does it work?

EAAs provide the full essential profile, including leucine, to trigger synthesis. However, they lack the satiety and completeness of whole proteins. For adequate protein eaters, EAAs add little; they are a convenience tool when real food or shakes are impossible.

Practical application

Use 10-15 g EAAs pre/intra if you cannot get protein for several hours around training. Otherwise, rely on meals or Whey Protein. Check products for flavoring and sweeteners if sensitive. Prioritize hydration and carbs for performance.

  • PreferenceChoose food/whey first; EAAs are a backup.
  • Dose10-15 g when needed around training.
  • ContextUseful during travel/fasted windows; unnecessary when protein is covered.

Common mistakes

  • Treating EAAs as superior to whole protein.
  • Double-spending on EAAs when protein intake is already high.
  • Ignoring carbs/electrolytes that more directly support performance.
